A drought catalogue for Baden-Württemberg

Drought is a recurrent, complex natural hazard with large impacts on environment and society. A better understanding of drought events in the past helps to provide context to the severity of current and future drought events. Today, a wealth of drought indices and climate proxies to study historical droughts are available. Such information varies in, e.g., accuracy, temporal and spatial resolution, but also record length. Here, we combine information from three different sources: dendrochronological analyses, hydro-climatological observations and simulations, and written evidence on past climates and drought impacts. In this study, we aim to build a drought catalogue for Baden-Württemberg from these different sources. We visually compare the different historical timelines and discuss the occurrence of major drought events in Baden-Württemberg from different perspectives.
